Research and development is the lifeblood of any technology business. This is an industry in which commercial success and technological innovation are fundamentally connected; with the ability to identify and create the much sought after Next Big Thing an essential for any vendor.

It is no secret therefore that Brocade wants the very best people working to improve and refine the performance and features of our products and solutions. And when it comes to finding the best talent, it’s important to take a global perspective.

So it is that we kicked off the New Year by bringing on board an entire team of the UK’s most experienced and technically skilled research and development engineers and leaders to work on the development of our SDN and NFV portfolio, and specifically the Brocade Vyatta vRouter. The new team is already in place and will be based in research facilities outside London and in Edinburgh. The skills and experience of the new team aligns perfectly with the development plans we have for the Brocade Vyatta vRouter.

Taking our European R&D even further, since this strong UK team came on board we have also announced our intent to acquire Riverbed Technology's SteelApp product line, a world leader in virtual ADC. The vast majority of the SteelApp R&D team is also in UK given its Cambridge roots, and spreads even further east into continental Europe. Upon close of the acquisition, the SteelApp product development team will join the Software Networking Business Unit, further strengthening Brocade’s vision to develop the best-of-breed technologies that will make the New IP a reality.

These teams will help drive even more aggressive improvements and expand Brocade’s SDN and NFV portfolio. We firmly believe that the future of the network lies in a New IP; one that includes intelligent, agile software. This new approach will be built upon dynamic technologies, with increased automation that leverages virtualisation, open architectures and ecosystems. As this new era in the IP networking industry unfolds, Brocade will continue to drive the world-leading performance benchmarks on Intel® hardware, offer a wide range of innovative virtual network functions and advance our clear dedication to open architectures as we have with our OpenDaylight-based SDN Controller.

At the end of the day, we achieve all of the above by continuing to attract the industry’s best R&D talent. The feedback from the newest additions to Brocade Vyatta vRouter team has so far been wonderful. It has been great to see how energised and excited they are about Brocade’s approach to truly open standards and our commitment to the New IP. There’s a real buzz about the place and some fantastic work going on already – so watch this space!
