Is 5G Progress for real or still a hype?

The stream of announcements and press releases highlighting successful 5G PoCs and trials by vendors and operators alike never ceases and picks up even more intensity around industry events like MWC17. Does that mean 5G technology is ready for deployment?  Well, not yet, but recent announcements from 3GPP do provide some credibility to the progress being made as well a timeline for deployments.

Mobile packet cores need to be thought about in units of mobile workloads that can process control plane, user plane and sessions plane transactions for a certain scale and to service a certain number of subscribers. A nodal decomposition into MME, SGW and PGW unnecessarily limits the scalability and software efficiency that is otherwise possible with a virtualized EPC.
