how to use a community string for switch discovery

we are currently not using a community string for swtich discovery. With the new version of EMC's ECC 6.1 we have SMI working but now we apparently need a Community String for switch discovery. Can someone please point me the the manual section or provide an example of how and when a community string is used for switch discovery?

thanks -- Thomas

Re: how to use a community string for switch discovery

I hope I have understood the question well. I presume you want know what a SNMP community string is and how its set on your switches.

Sample SNMPv1 configuration

switch:admin> snmpconfig --set snmpv1

SNMP community and trap recipient configuration:

Community (rw): admin

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation: 10.32.225.1

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5) 1

Community (rw):

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation:

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5)

Community (rw):

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation:

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5)

Community (ro):

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation:

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5)

Community (ro):

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation:

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5)

Community (ro):

Trap Recipient's IP address in dot notation:

Trap recipient Severity level : (0..5)

Committing configuration...done.

To see the current config

switch:admin> agtcfgshow

Check the SNMP configuration section in your Fabric OS guide for switches.

Auto discovery is easy using a simple poll via snmp. The default community string should be public.
