Questions on brocade performance metrics "PortTxFrames" and "PortRxFrames"

[ Edited ]

Hello,

Greetings!!!

I have a question on port performance metrics TxFrames and RxFrames collected using SNMP API. How can I convert values of above two metrics into MBytes?

Thanks.

Re: Questions on brocade performance metrics "PortTxFrames" and "PortRxFrames"

You can't, because frames have different sizes. For throughput, there are TX/RX 4-byte words metrics - these could be directly converted into whatever you want like KB, MB etc...

Hi Alexey,

Thanks for your prompt response.

In the switch firmware version v8.1.2a, the TX/RX 4-byte words metrics are obsoleted. Please see attached MIB guide (Page 71).

That's why I was looking for the alternative metrics of Port Tx/Rx 4-byte words.

Since Frames are in different sizes, is there any other metric available from which I can monitor the Port Tx and Rx?

Thanks in advance!!

Amit

Re: Questions on brocade performance metrics "PortTxFrames" and "PortRxFrames"

Hello,

I'm trying to find the same thing.  I know the OID's for TX/RX 4-byte words.  In v7.x, it was easy, just multuply by 4.  Now no matter what I try to get to bytes I'm coming out off.  I can get close to what BNA is showing in performance graphs but I'm getting there in a way I don't like.

Can you share the math to convert the hex output to bytes, I'd like to compare to what I'm using below...

To ge the stat64_wrx:

echo "ibase=16; $(snmpget -v2c -c public $switch iso.3.6.1.3.94.4.5.1.7.16.0.196.245.124.103.192.164.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.77 | awk '{print $4,$5,$6,$7,$8,$9,$10,$11}' | tr -d '[:space:]')" | bc

The above returns 234427606983760, which is the same as "portstats64show 76 -long".  I'm trying to get this # to bytes.

Thanks,

Al

Hi Al,

Are the values of stat64_wrx and stat64_wtx is equivalent to what we get from TX/RX 4-byte words? Could you please confirm this.

Re: Questions on brocade performance metrics "PortTxFrames" and "PortRxFrames"

From the MIB reference guide attached above:

TABLE 62 portStats64Show command

stat64_wtx Number of 4-byte words transmitted.
Object: connUnitPortStatCountTxElements multiplied by four
Table name: connUnitPortStatTable
OID:1.3.6.1.3.94.4.5.1.6

stat64_wrx Number of 4-byte words received.
Object: connUnitPortStatCountRxElements multiplied by four
Table name: connUnitPortStatTable
OID:1.3.6.1.3.94.4.5.1.7

Hi Alexey,

Thanks.

We tried to get connUnitPortStatCountTxElements and connUnitPortStatCountRxElements  but the values returned are in Hex-String.

##########

[root@localhost probe]# snmpwalk -v 2c -c public -O e 192.168.20.3 1.3.6.1.3.94.4.5.1.6

SNMPv2-SMI::experimental.94.4.5.1.6.16.0.0.5.51.183.117.213.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.3 = Hex-STRING: 00 00 D7 44 AD 65 71 F4

It will be great if you could let me know how to convert these Hex-Strings into MBytes? :)

Hello Alexey,

Thanks for quick turnaround. It would be very helpful if you have knowledge of converting Hex-Strings into MBytes.

Re: Questions on brocade performance metrics "PortTxFrames" and "PortRxFrames"

I didn't have such experience, but it seems that the conversion algorithm is provided in the message from aljeffcoat on 07-06-2018 at 11:26 PM above in this discussion thread.

Otherwise, I think you may need to open a request to Brocade support team and/or search the Knowledge Base if you have access in there.
