Fabric Manager pWWN - how to configure?

I need assistance. I have a fabric (SPB) that has 2 zones configured. One for CLARiON MirrorView ("MirrorViewSPB") for communication between 2 EMC CLARiiONs, and one for regular SAN traffic ("DefaultSPB") from the regular hosts to the CLARiiONs. I cannot get anything to work with pWWN, although I had it working perfectly with "hard zoning (d,p)".

The CLARiiONs are each connected to a different FC switch - and the 2 FC switches have ISL trunking working between them (ports 0, 1)

HOW should I configure the zones?

On MirrorViewSPB I have tried just adding the two pWWNs. On DefaultSPB I have all of the other host and CLARiiON pWWNs. Neither of these work.

I also tried the configuration above, and I added ALL of the ports from all of the switches (d,p) to see if there was an interconnect issue, but nothing.

Can someone point me in the right directions.

What Kind of switches, and what FOS levels?

Re: Fabric Manager pWWN - how to configure?

Primary fabric switches:

DS-32B2 (EMC Branded) "12 - 2GBit 32-port switch" running v5.3.0a * -

DS-16B2 (EMC Branded) "9 - 2GBit 16-port switch" running v3.2.1c * -

  • - highest rev approved by EMC support as of March 2008

HP Blade fabric switches...not sure of exact models without pulling component:

"29 - 4GBit 12 port embedded Fabric switch" running v5.3.0a *

"29 - 4GBit 12 port embedded Fabric switch" running v5.3.0a *

These are connecting a number of blades and stand-alone HP servers running a combo of VMWare ESX server and Windows 2k3 Server and two (2) EMC CLARiiON CX500s. And again, I am trying to configure 1 segregated zone for ONLY MirrorView between the 2 CLARiiONs and 1 zone for all of the other SAN traffic.

thanks,

Sean

Re: Fabric Manager pWWN - how to configure?

Let me try to diagram:

Clariion cx500 (DR site)

| (Multimode 2GB connection)

DS-16B2 (Silkworm 3800)

| | | | (8GB total: ISL trunks - 2 trunks of two Singlemode connections)

DS-32B2 (Silkworm 3900)

| (Multimode 2GB connection)

Clariion cx500 (DR site)

I am requesting help in setting up two "soft" zones:

  • Zone 1 is to be used for EMC MirrorView which is only to connect 1 port of each CLARiiON to each other - no other traffic.

  • Zone 2 is to be used for all SAN traffic that is NOT MirrorView.

Re: Fabric Manager pWWN - how to configure?

Yes, how to I configure pWWN (soft zoning) with fabric manager?

The whole idea of Fabric manager is (and part of the sales literature states) that you can configure it centrally and push the configs down to all of the switches, while keeping an offline copy.

I cannot find any documentation on HOW to do it. I see lots of stuff saying that you CAN do it....but nothing on how to actually deploy it.

The "Brocade Zoning Userguide" (pdf) says:

"Soft Zones:

In a soft zone, at least one zone member is specified by WWN. A device is

included in a zone if either the node WWN or port WWN specified matches

an entry in the name server table.

When a device logs in, it queries the name server for devices within the

fabric. If zoning is in effect, only the devices in the same zone(s) are

returned. Other devices are hidden from the name server query reply. When

a WWN is specified, all ports on the specified device are included in the

zone.

3-2 Brocade Zoning User’s Guide

Using Brocade Zoning 3

Soft zones are name server-dependent and therefore provide more flexibility

- new devices can be attached without regard to physical location. However,

the switch does not control data transfer so there is no guarantee against data

transfer from unauthorized zone members. Use soft zoning where flexibility

is important and security can be ensured by the cooperating hosts."

This leads me to think that I need to just add the port WWN for the 1 port on EACH CLARiiON that I want to connect, enable the config and deploy it. But that doesn;t work. See my original post for the other option that also didn't work.

What am I doing wrong...?
