Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

I am trying to build a small network using an old Silkworm 3250.

To be able to use current configuration software I need to get it to FOS 5.3.

Starting at 4.2 I upgraded to 4.4 and then to 5.0.

But when I try to go to 5.2, the upgrade starts but after a while shows an error message that it 'timed out'.

Any suggestions what could be wrong?

Please bear in mind I am new to all this Fiber Optic stuff and it is quite a steep learning curve.

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Hi,

did you get the time out after the switch had startet to download the source files from your FTP share?

If you get the time out message after 30 minutes I assume that you have an ethernet issue between SAN switch management interface and your FTP server.

Check with your network team on both sides the DUPLEX settings and if you can see many errors during the download operation.

On the SAN switch run on the CLI the command ifmodeshow eth0 to check what is set.

My recommendation is to fix it on both ends to the same settings.

I hope this helps. If not let me know.

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Thank you Andreas.

One small problem, I am my network team....

But I have checked the settings and they are:

Link Mode: 100Mbit, Full Duplex, Link OK

The firmware download and upgrade works fine until fabos-wwnhs is completed (full row of #)

That is where it stops and after a while shows:

Firmware download timed out

Firmwaredownload failed (0x23)

If there were a ethernet problem, why didn't that show during the first two upgrades (4.4 & 5.0)?

Roderick

Update:  Just gave it another try.  Now it all worked as far as 'fastcgi' after which it timed out again.

There was steady ethernet activity until it showed the 'timed out' message

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Roderick,

did you have checked both sides Ethernet switch port and SAN switch management port settings?

Please have an eye on the time. Brocade stops after 30 minutes in the newer FOS versions the firmware update procedure automatically.

In nearly 95% of these issues it was a duff ethernet connection between SAN switch and ethernet switch.

5% were related to a duff FOS packages which get corrupt.

The other packages which you load before were smaller.

I hope this helps.

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

I've also had an upgrade fail (with the same error) because of firewall problems: can you confirm that you're connecting directly?

I see this issue in the past by direct Upgrade from 5.0.x to 5.2.x.

Try to Upgrade first to any 5.1.x release and then to 5.2.x and so on.

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Thank you all for your suggestions, but my problem remains.

I have downloade V5.1.1 but the same problem - after exactly 30 minutes the firmwaredownload stops.

I have checked:

Ethernet connections - both at Full Duplex 100Mbps

Firewall - turned off

Anything else running on the box with FTP server - turned off except Telnet & Task Manager

Observation:  When the download is running, it only uses less than 0.5% of bandwidth.

The main reason I want to upgrade to V5.3 is so that I can run EZSwitchSetup.  The version I have found won't work with earlier FOS.

Does anybody know where I could find a version of EZSwitchSetup that would run with an earlier FOS?

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Roderick,

What do the logs of your FTP server show - and which ftp server are you using?

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

Hi,

If you can observ that only 0.5% bandwidth the transfer is using than you have somewhere frame drops or collisions on the ethernet way between SAN switch and FTP server.

Please check if really both interfaces are set to fixed full duplex and not to AUTO mode. This is really important. I know that many network guys like auto on the ethernet ports but this will not work correctly with every ethernet switch.

Re: Silkworm 3250 FOS upgrade problems

At the moment I am using just the MS IIS FTP server in XP.

Here is part of the log:

#Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.1
#Version: 1.0
#Date: 2011-02-06 00:00:00
#Fields: time c-ip cs-method cs-uri-stem sc-status
00:00:00 192.168.0.32 USER anonymous 331
00:00:00 192.168.0.32 PASS root@ 230
00:00:19 192.168.0.32 sent /V511/textutils-1.22-1.ppc.rpm 226
00:00:21 192.168.0.32 USER anonymous 331
00:00:21 192.168.0.32 PASS root@ 230
00:00:25 192.168.0.32 sent /V511/setup-1.3.4-23.ppc.rpm 226
00:00:26 192.168.0.32 USER anonymous 331

00:00:26 192.168.0.32 USER anonymous 331
00:00:26 192.168.0.32 PASS root@ 230
00:00:30 192.168.0.32 sent /V511/which-2.12-1.ppc.rpm 226

all the way to:

00:23:01 192.168.0.32 PASS root@ 230
00:25:29 192.168.0.32 sent /V511/fabos-libs-5.1.1b-9.ppc.rpm 226

And I have checked the thernet settings.  Both are full duplex, not auto.

The configuration is very basic:

Silkworm -> Netgear router (FR114P) -> FTP server

Should I try to add a second ethernet port to the FTP server and link directly (grasping at straws...)

Cheers

Roderick
