We have issues with ESX 4.1 and QLA2340 where fabric changes causes paths to fail and in extreme cases loose the visibility to LUNs. Our fabric and the storage devices all operate at 4Gbps where as the QLA2340 operates at 2 Gbps. Any reasonable explanations so far is that the QLA2340 cannot handle the RSCN changes occuring at the fabric at the same rate as it is suppose to handle. The resolution suggested so far is to replace all the QLA2340 HBA with QLA2460 4Gbps. Im not overly convinced with this explanation. Has any of you out there in the Brocade world had similar issues and had to replace the 2Gbps HBA with 4Gbps HBAs?

No usually its an zoning, lun mask-/mapping issue or misconfig of the load balancing policy of the luns.
Are you using an active/passive controller design storage array or active/active.
In A/P esx should have configured the luns on MRU (most recently used) and on A/A arrays it should be fixed.

Hi Dion, Its ESX 4.1 and the storage controller is Active/Active and the multipath driver at ESX level is set to Fixed. Still I have these issues.

Guys, One more update on this issue. Apparently VMware have seen this issue where the QLA2340 is ignoring RSCN when the adapter is busy. This is the response we got from VMware. The issue I have with this response is that we have many QLA2340 adapters in our massive SAN and no one had any issues except on the ESX servers. And Im telling you all my driver stack below is fully supported confirmed. We are planning to replace only the ESX servers with QLA2340 with the QLA2460s.
x3950 / 8872-8RM + x3950E / 8874-3RM
QLogic PCI to Fibre Channel Host Adapter for QLA2340:
FC Firmware version 3.03.20 IPX, Driver version 831.k1.28.1-1vmw
Host Device Name vmhba1
BIOS version 1.54
EFI version 0.00
Flash FW version 0.00.00
ESX version: VMware ESX 4.1.0 build-260247

A nice to know you tackled your problem.
As for the ESX only having trouble with QLA2340, it could be a specific bug concerning you hba, the driver and firmware versions loaded and ESX patch level.
Strange though a quick search on vmware communities did not reveal any threads of value nor support documents?
Maybe qla2340 is just to old?
