i have a setup of two Fabrics each with two Brocade 6510 SAN Switches with FOS 7.0.1
Now I have to extend both Fabrics by two Brocade G620 which where shipped with 8.0.1b and need minium 8.x.
I read the Release Notes and I think I have to update the Brocade 6510 to minium FOS 7.3.1 in order to have a mixed Fabric which is compatible. Is it right?
The second option is to update the 6510 to 8.0.1b to have a homogeneous Fabric.
The setup will stay for a few month to migrate the systems.
I am not quite sure if I should update to minium 7.3.1 / higher 7.x release or to 8.0.1b or highest 8.x release because lots of Systems with older OS are connected to the Switch.
Is there something special I should take into account? Which option would you recommend?
Thanks for your Feedback!
With kind regards,

what you meaning with "older OS" ?
from a technical and compatiblity point of view, at 99,999% all HOST and/or Storage Connected to 6510 will continue to work without any issue or restrictions when you upgrade from FOS 7.0. to FOS 7.3, the same with FOS 8.0.x or 8.1.x
in rare circumstance, you can may have issue with HBA Bios/FW or Storage Microcode Release.
in such case you should get in touch you Storage Vendor.

you need bring 6510 to at least 7.3.1 to working with G620 at 8.0.1b.
I would update the G620 to 8.0.2c (last relase - 8.0.2x is planned for target path in close future). I prefer to have the same FOS version on all switches in a fabric, if feasible, so long time I would aim for upgrading to 8.0.2c on the 6510, but initially you need to have on 7.3.1 or on the current target path (TP) 7.4.1d/e.
As Antonio mentionned, the I do not expect much issues with older system if you change FOS.

thanks for your feedback!!
there are some IBM Power Systems with old IBM System i/OS v6.1.1. LPARs
So you would recommend to Update 6510 and G620 both to 8.0.2c to have the same version on all switches instead of having a mixed environment? Do you have a reason for that or are there any disadvantages in having a mixed fabric? I read about zoning should always be done on the switch with higher FOS.
Thanks for your support!

It's best practice to have the same FOS version on all switches, so I would go for that as it's possible in your scenario.
If you are setting this up there is no reason not to use the version Martin mentioned.

and of course the advantage is possible defect fixes.

thanks for your replies.
So non-distruptive Upgrade Path will be:
7.0.1 --> 7.1.1c --> 7.2.1g --> 7.3.1e --> 7.4.1d --> 8.0.2b ?
I am not able to see and download 8.0.2c @ ibm.brocadeassist.com so 8.0.2b will be okay?
Could you please validate the Upgrade Path?

FOS v8.0.2c was release May 30, is probable this is not Qualified and approved by IBM at this time , and for this reason not available in ibm.assist download, where "b" is a GA Qualified and Approved by IBM for both Open and FICON.
Target Upgrade Path is ok.

Brocade community forced me to choose a new username, I don't know why.. I think it should be connected with my brocade account!?
