How to find out inactive zones and singly connected hosts?

Hi,

Is there a way to find the following?

1. Inactive zones. There are bunch of decommed hosts and we would like to clean up.

2. Host which do not have redundant connection to a fabric. We want to remediate those before a upcoming fabric migration.

We have CLI, web too, SANHealth and BNA(Trial version) at our disposal.

Hi,

With command "zone --validate", the switch will show the Active zoning and, in it, which members of each zone are fully logged in the Fabric. So that you can check which zones are not active (you have to check that, efectively, those zones does not correspond to any host that is temporary shutdown).

Thanks for the info.

So everything that shows up from "zone --validate" is inactive?

It shows two sections- "Defined configuration" and "Effective configuration"

Re: How to find out inactive zones and singly connected hosts?

Hi again,

Let me show it to you with an example:

I run "zone --validate" on a switch and it shows the following:

SWITCH:felipon> zone --validate

<...>

Effective configuration:
cfg: ZONESET
zone: ESX1_HBA4_CX4_SPA2
50:06:01:62:41:e0:ee:03
21:03:00:1b:32:71:63:2a
zone: WIN1_cx3_spa1
50:06:01:61:30:20:d0:71*
10:00:00:00:c9:05:dd:a4

zone: WIN1_CX4_SPA2
50:06:01:62:41:e0:ee:03
10:00:00:00:c9:05:dd:a4

zone: WIN2_cx3_spa1
50:06:01:61:30:20:d0:71*
10:00:00:00:c0:05:ab:01*

------------------------------------

~ - Invalid configuration
* - Member does not exist
# - Invalid usage of broadcast zone

As you can see, the output of the command shows 4 active zones in the Effective zoneset:

  • ESX1_HBA4_CX4_SPA2: This one is OK and all its members are Online and logged in the Fabric.
  • WIN1_cx3_spa1: this zone shows a CLARiiON port with an asterisk (*), this means that that WWN is not logged in the Fabric. In this particular case it is because that CLARiiON has been decommissioned, so this zone can be removed.
  • WIN1_CX4_SPA2: this zone is OK, since all its members are Online and logged in.
  • WIN2_cx3_spa1: this zone, although is active in the config, none of its members are online (both WWN have the asterisk). In this case, both server WIN2 and CX3 have been decomissioned and the zone can be removed and deleted.

As you see, with this command you can check the state of each zone, and its members. And it can help you find which zones are not required anymore.
