Help with 2005-16B (SilkWorm 200E)

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I am trying to connect to a 2005-16B via a Serial Connection.

All my computers have USB, and no Serial.

So I purchased a StarTech FTDI USB to RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable which has a USB to DB9 that plugs right in correctly.

I have set up the Port correctly to 9600/8/none/1/none, using PUTTY/Windows 7 on Port2 which is what the USB Driver is set at, and I can't get a response from the Switch.  Anyone have any advice...

I am trying to set the IP Address on this switch so I can put in on our Network.

The other thing I need to figure out once I get this working, is if the switch will just work, or do the ports need to be configured.

I am using this to connect a IBM Tape Library that has two LTO Tape Drives 4GB so I can share these Drives across multiple LPAR's on my IBMi Host.

Thanks,

Keith

Doing more research, I wonder if i need a USB to Serial Cable, and then a Straight Through DB9 to DB9 Cable to talk to Switch with Putty?

Anyone know?

From what I remember, B200E had a nonstandard DB9 pinout. So ideally you'd need a USB to DB9 female connector and then attach an original serial cable that was bundled with the switch.

Re: Help with 2005-16B (SilkWorm 200E)

Thanks for your response...

I found in the manual it said it is a Straight Through Cable.

I don't have the cable that comes with it.

I just ordered one, and also a USB to DB9 Serial Cable.

I am hoping this will work.

I am using Putty, so not sure if it requires any special configuration.

But at least I am on the right track.

Can I ask you a question, that hopefully you can answer.

Does this switch require any Zones to be Created, or will it just work when I plug in all my Fiber Cables.

Nothing fancy going on here, it is just to share my IBM Tape Library.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: Help with 2005-16B (SilkWorm 200E)

You could additionally plug a null-modem convertor.

PuTTY should be 9600/8/N/1 and None as flow control, I remember it sets XON/XOFF by default.

Switch might work without any config, depending on how it was configured before. I'd say chances are not so high. Especially because IBM tapes usually require some tweaking even to setup the links.

Re: Help with 2005-16B (SilkWorm 200E)

Well, I am now taking to the Switch with Putty...

I used the Startech USB to Serial Cable and Driver for Windows 7.

Then I connected a Serial Straight through Cable to the Switch and I can now log on.

I was able to set the IP Address for our Network.

I will post another question on a different topic.

Thanks for everyones help.
