Does device have to be online for "aliadd" to work?

I have to migrate McData fabrics to a Brocade environment in two locations. I am doing this via Integrated Routing and LSANs. At my first location I used DFCM to create the LSAN zones, etc. In the second location I want to create zones, define aliases, etc., using the CLI. Although the commands appear to be straightforward, I tried building zone with one object and that gave me trouble so I tried this basic command.

DCXA:admin> cfgshow
Defined configuration:
cfg:   ZoneSet1
                Zone1

Effective configuration:
no configuration in effect

DCXA:admin> aliadd "Host1","21:01:00:1b:32:2e:30:5e"
"Host1" not found
DCXA:admin>

Is this command failing because the WWN specified isn't attached to the fabric yet?

No, the device does not have to be online.  The "aliadd" command is used to add a device to an existing alias.  In your case, the alias does not yet exist which is why you are seeing the error.

Start with 'alicreate "Host1","21:01:00:1b:32:2e:30:5e"

Then any subsequent additions to the "Host1" alias can be added using 'aliadd'.
