DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

HI All , Got a strange issue.

We got multimode cable laid between 2 building. One building we got Netapp and in another building we got DS5100-b.

When we connect the filer on switchport. I does see WWPN in switchshow command. I was happy to see that . But i dont see its performing FLOGI in name server database(nsshow output) . I thoguht its netapp card issue so i plugged it to another netapp but no luck , also tried changing the switchport but no luck. also tried setting differnt speed no luck again.

Here is what i see in nsshow . Look at two outputs. In first one I dont see PortSymb information. That is why even on netapp side netapp is not able get the switch information.  The second output is for netapp port connected to switch looks good. Only difference in this netapp (good one ) its in  same building whre  FC switch is so its directly connect . And the problem one netapp is in another building connected over fibre patch panel.

I am  sure that we dont need to do anything from our side. Something should be required on patch panel side but two important obeservation

One is there is light coming out from both end but when i plug it is shows AMBER light on Card/port insted of Green one.

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

Are you sure you've got the right port, because according to your ns output the switch is convinced the bad WWN is/are

N    010000;      3;21:01:00:1b:32:33:ff:22;20:01:00:1b:32:33:ff:22; na

And your filler tells you its

FC Node Name:      21:01:00:1b:32:33:d5:24 (fixed the colons or readability)

The last 2 bytes are different

Multimode cables are mean for short distances? what is the distance between the devices? is the cable OM3 or OM4 ? what is the port speed currently set?

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

Hi SKT ,

Its Multimode cable of type OM3 Laser speed duplex Multimode 50-micron and distance between device is 400mtrs max .

Speed on Switch port is auto, I tried setting it to 2Gbps but no luck. 1gbps not supported by switch so when i set it to 1G it gives me   FC  "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible Vendor"

Hi Dion ,

Sorry for confusion .I pasted the wrong output.

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

400 meters is over the edge of OM3 specs at 4G and on the far edge should you have OM4 cables.

If one or more patchpanels are used to establish a connection it's almost unlikely you'll get an usable link.

2GB should be possible depending on the quality of the fiber and SFP's etcetc. used.

Consider dropping a switch to reduce cable lenght.

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

Correct however sandeep is running his filler a 4G, which makes to theoretical distance 380 meters.

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

r u sure there is valid a relation like that? How did u come to this number @4Gbps/380m from @8Gbp/150m ?

Re: DS5100-B port coming online in Switchshow put not doing FLOGI

Those numbers are valid if you assume the numbers from Brocades training guides are valid.

But the same numbers are found on different site aswell. Like this wiki page which is easily found.

However its op to the various vendors to support the distance in the end.

In this case either NetApp and or Qlogic (vendor of HBA NetApp uses) should support it.

Please note its the theoretical limit, real life figures depends on the gear you use.

And according to the link in your own post (#6) Cisco supports 380 meters on OM3 @ 4 & 8G
