B2B Zero in Dual Fabric same Time

Hi all

 

We have Dual Fabric with 2x12 Switches what we see is every Day exact 08:00 in the morning we have on all Switches Core and Edge B2B Zero dedection 2Mio. - 40 Mio.

 

Can anyone tell me the right way to found out wath is the Problem, If it is a Problem ??

Hi,

 

If you have no discarded class 3 (C3TX or C3RX), it is not a realized problem, e.g. you do not have an actual problem yet. What is interesting is that we do not see any peak in "Durchsatz" at the same time.

 

What are the FOS version and what kind of switches do you have?

What kind of routing policy are you using?

From the charts, it is looking like all trunks are concerned, right?

Are using bottleneckmon or FPI to detect problems?

Can you share the output from portstatsshow from on ISL which is worse hits (e.g. do a portstatsclear at 755 and at 0805 to portstatsshow) to see if / which VC which is hit if any....

 

Be aware that one a single ISL/F-port we can generate up to 400K B2B in a second. One option would be to check for any F-port which have an increase in B2B at the same time as you see the peak in the ISL....

A) Based on the graphs and the scaling I can read, you don't have a problem. You are not even close to the threshold of the switches or ISLs bandwidth. There have been no discarded class 3 frames(data) since 8/22, and there are no TX Timeouts or RX timeouts.

 

B) Having said that, there are some times when the buffer count goes to zero.

 

C) Looking at the output of the portstatsshow you have not cleared the stats, so we don't know if we are looking at current, or legacy data:

D) At the FOS version you are running, we now have a monitoring package called Flow Vision. It takes the place of the Fabric Watch Adv Perf Monitors from the past. To find the data you are looking for, you will want to use the Flow Monitor to setup a report to find the F_Port devices which are using the most bandwidth at that time frame.

 

Setting up and tuning the Flow Monitor is beyond the scope of this post, but much info can be found in the document library: Brocade Flow Vision Administration Guide, 7.4.0 Doc # 53-1003520-04. This will guide you through setting up a monitor for the most active F_ports(devices entering the fabrics), which used to be called Top Talkers in the previous version. If you choose, you can setup detailed flow statistical counters right down to the LUN level within the storage device.

 

E) Since you are seeing this on two discrete and separate fabrics, this spike is coming from outside the fabric(s) and will be related to some device/server/storage F_port which is kicking off an application, or refreshing at 8am every day. The hunt is on to find it!

 

F) Rather than portstatsshow, use portstats64show. There is more detail in that output. Look near the bottom of the output for "Ave TX frame size" and "Ave RX frame size". Note that small frames consume more buffers, and this is true of ISLs just as with F_Ports. You may find some interesting info in the frame sizes being shipped and returned. I don't know the application but if it is a small frame, the burst may be related to a journal update, or file managment process that begins at 8am, and performs a consistency or reconcilliation process - but this is simply a guess, it could be many other things as well.

 

Read up on Flow Vision from the admin guide. There are also some primitive perf monitors avail from WebTools which will provide quick glance at your networks, but I think you've already found these.

I share Doc's view, that is looking like something (server ?) connected to both fabric is kicking off something at 08:00 every morning.

 

If you have bottleneckmon or FPI running, which F-port are logging errors in the morning after 08:00?

 

Another way is to look at which F-ports is incrementing B2B at 08:00 - with this huge incrementing on ISL, we should see some increment in F-ports involved around 08:00. 

 

But first, I would like to deternine which VC is causing the peak of B2B - could you for two of the ISl which is shoiwng the largest increment of B2B, do the following

 

at 07:55 - portstatsclear

at 08:05 - portstats64show -long  & portstatsshow

 

and posting the output please.
