5300 and auto-negotiate ports not working

Hi all,

I just sparked up a new 5300 switch licensed with 8 gigs and a full 80 ports.  I have plugged in an IBM DS5300 and IBM SVC into the switch.  When the ports are set to auto-negotiate the speed, I get them trying to connect, then they just end up showing "Port_Flt" and none of the hardware logs into the fabric.

When I hard code the ports to 4 gb, then all of my SVC and DS5300 ports log in no problem.

The SVC ports are all 8 gb and the DS5300 ports are all 4 gb.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks.

Re: 5300 and auto-negotiate ports not working

Port_Flt   means  Port is marked faulty . do u see all the ports of 5300 is like that.

it should show you like this if 8 Gbps SFPS are there :

40  40   id    N8   No_Light
41  41   id    N8   No_Light
42  42   id    N8   No_Light
43  43   id    N8   No_Light
44  44   id    N8   No_Light
45  45   id    N8   No_Light

check through the cmnd >>switchstatusshow

it will show you portmarginal.

check with errdump also.

check with portshow  portno

Discuss with your SW vendor .

if you find the thread correct pls mark it

Re: 5300 and auto-negotiate ports not working

Only ports that have something plugged in show "Port_Flt".

This is a brand new switch (newly powered on) with brand new SFP's.

We currently have 12 ports plugged in that are giving me these errors.

Re: 5300 and auto-negotiate ports not working

You can try to play with the fillword setting on the switch. Change the values with the command portcfgfillword. May your SVC needs ARBff as fillword.

Did you use OM3 patch cables for your SVC? How long is the connection between SVC and switch?

I hope this helps.

Re: 5300 and auto-negotiate ports not working

Turns out I needed to do a "portcfgfillword <port#>, 3" with all the ports that my IBM gear is attached to.

This seems to have fixed the auto negotiate problem.

Thanks.
