Would anyone know a FOS CLI command that can verify the principal switch can communicate with the NTP server previously configured with tsclockserver?

:smileywink: The switch will start to complain by itself as soon as it is unable to communicate with the NTP server. You will see eventlog entries. A ping at least will confirm an ICMP connection between the two. Obviously if firewalls and/or switch ACL's are configured to block NTP communication you ned to adjust that.

Do you know how often a switch queries NTP server? If errordump shows many consecutive "NTP query failed" messages, one 5 minutes after the other, is there a chance that the switch successfully communicated with NTP server somewhere "in between"?

It may be worth configuring multiple NTP servers if you have them. This should result in the most robust one being active.
If you want to check out the existing NTP server then you can just try re-adding it with the tsclockserver command - it will let you know if that is not reachable at that time.

I got this from EMC support when I asked the same question for EMC Connectrix switches (re-branded Brocade).
On the switch, the NTP interval is based on an algorithm based on network jitter. It cannot be set on the switches themselves, but the switch tries to poll during periods of low network noise between the frames.
