startup-config locked

So, I just started at a company that has a couple of fastiron edge switches.  One of them is out of commission, and I am trying to bring it back from the dead.  I was told that the previous net admin bricked the thing and "tried a hack that didn't work".  I have no idea what that means, and neither does anyone in the company.

I brought it up, brought up the console, and was presented with a boot prompt - like rommon on a Cisco.  I tftp'ed the flash boot code from the working switch, booted that code from tftp, then copied that code to flash.  Now the switch actually boots properly with the correct software.

Only problem is that I can't actually save the running config to startup.  I can make changes to the running config, but can't save or retain them after bootup.

Any help that anyone can provide would be most appreciated.  This thing is driving me crazy!

Some stuff out of the switch, if it helps:

Re: startup-config locked

try a 'erease statup'

first

if that does not work try

reboot the switch with a console cable pluged in and type 'b' for boot options then see if you can erase the startup file.

Re: startup-config locked

Thanks for the response!

I tried the erase startup command, but it does not work.  Here is the output:

FESX448 Switch#erase startup-config
file is locked, startup-config.txt
Erase startup-config Done.

Same thing every time.  Also, I do not see an option to erase startup from the boot prompt:

FEX-Boot>
boot             Boot system
ip               Set IP address
monitor          Toggle monitor mode
reset            Reset system
show             Show information

"Erase startup" just produces an error.

Any more suggestions?

Re: startup-config locked

I assume you are not able to copy the start config using TFTP either?

Re: startup-config locked

Yep, that fails too.  Says file is locked:

FESX448 Switch#copy tftp start 10.5.5.4 startup-config
FESX448 Switch#file is locked, startup-config.txt
file is locked, startup-config.txt
Flash Write Preparation Failed. Try again after a few seconds.
Error - can't download startup-config from TFTP server.

Re: startup-config locked

Also try booting form the secondard image to see if that work.

#boot system flash secondary

and retest.

If that works then erase the primary.  Also if you have access to the newer images I would suggest updating and that is a very of code rev.

Re: startup-config locked

I tried "reload factory" and "reload factory-defaults" (something I found to this effect on another forum), but neither take effect - just a bad command error.

I also tried booting from the secondary flash, but the same thing happens - "file is locked, startup-config.txt"

Man, is this thing just bricked?  It's a shame, because it's like a $6k switch.

Re: startup-config locked

ok, I have asked around - the answer I have received is Bricked.

I have never seen this in 10+ years working with these switches/routers.  Love to know how he did it.

Sorry I can not get you a better answer.

Re: startup-config locked

ok I hold little faith in this but worth a try.

1. reload the switch and break in with the 'B' for boot monitor (from a machine with console access - like you have done in the past).

then enter 'use default' (small chance)

2. This works on an Edgeiron reload to-defaults (But I do not think it will work on a FESX)  buy hay....
