Which modules would you use on your first 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) links?

A variety of 100 GbE optical modules are coming out on the market (which I briefly describe here):

  • 100GBASE-SR10 (150 m MMF)
  • 10x10 MSA (2 km and 10 km SMF)
  • 100GBASE-LR4 (10 km SFM)
  • 100GBASE-ER4 (40 km SMF)

Which of the modules would you use on your first 100 GbE links?  Do you anticipate needing short reach or longer reach links first?

Since it appears that long haul providers are adopting the 40G over 100G, I think that first adopters will likely be using this more for interconnects within a datacenter at first, followed closely by metro area extensions. So I would bet that the SR optics will be more prevalent in the short term.

Hey Ken, demand for short reach optics is exactly what we're seeing in our 100 GbE data center deployments.  The 10x10 2 km optics are the most popular (since they can reach a longer distance than 100GBASE-SR10), which are needed in warehouse-scale or multi-building data centers.
