Show ip traffic

Hi

on one of my switches im seeing a lot of "bad header" and "other error" drops with the show ip traffic command.

switch#show ip traffic

IP Statistics

  1521425443 received, 56760992 sent, 1325263305 forwarded

  0 filtered, 0 fragmented, 2 reassembled, 5722549 bad header

6 no route, 0 unknown proto, 0 no buffer, 19820376 other errors

I am having troubles with some servers but im not sure if this is related to the dropped packets. Is there any way to see this statistic per interface, or any other way to trace where the drops are occurring? also is there any way to clear the "show ip traffic" statistics?

Re: Show ip traffic

In looking at my FCX switch, I see the command you have shown above with clean stats.  Here is an additional command you can use to output the interface stats to show errors:

show int | inc line|error|runt|under|buffer

SSH@FCX_648#show int | inc line|error|runt|under|buffer

GigabitEthernet1/1/1 is up, line protocol is up

3624029 packets input, 302241190 bytes, 0 no buffer

  0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 ignored

  0 runts, 0 giants

  1291219 packets output, 101381878 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions

GigabitEthernet1/1/2 is up, line protocol is up

33910 packets input, 4154019 bytes, 0 no buffer

  0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 ignored

  0 runts, 0 giants

  97992 packets output, 13313260 bytes, 0 underruns

  0 output errors, 0 collisions

Not quite as nice as having a "show interface counter error" command but you can get an idea of how the interfaces are running quickly.

Re: Show ip traffic

I have not seen any dropped packets on my physical ports, but I cant find any command to show the same information for virtual VLAN interfaces (ve interfaces)?

Re: Show ip traffic

You can try the # clear ip traffic command   to clear the stats .

Re: Show ip traffic

That command is not available on the switch:

SSH@switch#clear ip

  acl-traffic   Clear access list traffic

  bgp

  cache

  flow

  mroute

  multicast     clear igmp/pim snooping

  nat           network addresss translation

  ospf          Clear OSPF commands

  route

  tunnel        Clear tunnel statistics

  vrrp-stat

SSH@switch#clear ip

I did figure out the reason for the "bad header" and "other errors". These counters match sent ICMP time exceeded and ICMP unreachable messages.

IP Statistics

  2085592208 received, 57213895 sent, 1888021803 forwarded

  0 filtered, 0 fragmented, 2 reassembled, 5825496 bad header

6 no route, 0 unknown proto, 0 no buffer, 19935027 other errors

ICMP Statistics

...

Sent:

  24325343 total, 0 errors, 18030604 unreachable, 5825453 time exceed

  0 parameter, 0 source quench, 2 redirect, 9 echo,

469275 echo reply, 0 timestamp, 0 timestamp reply, 0 addr mask

0 addr mask reply, 0 irdp advertisement, 0 irdp solicitation
