Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

Hello guys,

it's me again. How can I add multiple IPs to each port for FESX448-PREM Switch? ex. I want IPs 8.33.8.10 to 8.33.8.15 and 8.33.8.211 on port 5? also, is there way to save the switch setting as backup and/or way to load the backup file for this switch? Again, thanks and appreciated for all the help.

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

Hi ret,

what about using the Brocade configuration manual and the PDF search?! ;-)

By default, you can configure up to 24 IP addresses on each interface.

conf t

interface ethe 5

ip address xx.xx.xx.xx/XX

ip address yy.yy.yy.yy/YY secondary

and so on

You only have the "write mem" to save the running-config to the startup-config.

You could save the config to external TFTP server:

copy startup-config tftp <IP address TFTP server> filename

and back to the switch

copy tftp startup-config <IP address TFTP server> filename

Cheers,

karl

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

I did read but I don't get it, unless it's to the point.

I don't get this;

ip address xx.xx.xx.xx/XX

ip address yy.yy.yy.yy/YY secondary

I have try

ip address 8.33.8.10/29

ip address 8.33.8.10/30

ip address 8.33.8.211/29

it didn't work.

onenetwork-net(config-if-e1000-5)#ip address 8.33.8.10/30

Invalid input -> address 8.33.8.10/30

Type ? for a list

Can you help me put Ips 8.33.8.10, 8.33.8.11, 8.33.8.12, 8.33.8.13, 8.33.8.14, 8.33.8.15 and 8.33.8.211 in

ip address xx.xx.xx.xx/XX

ip address yy.yy.yy.yy/YY secondary

form?

Please note I have the whole /24 IPs to myself with 8.33.8.1 gateway.

I'm a slow learner

Thanks

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

Hi ret.

What should be the sense or advantage to add multiple IPs from the same /24 subnet to a dedicated ethernet interface?

What is your goal?

You are able to add only one IP from a subnet to a router port.

You cannot add multiple IPs from the same /24 subnet to a single router interface.

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

The guy told me for /24 block I have about 254 usuable IPs. Seen I have about 10 servers I want each server to have 20 assigned static IPs from this switch. So, you're saying it's not possible? Is there anyway to assign 20IPs for each server from this switch? Thanks

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

Hi Ret,

You assign the static ip on the server and not on the switch.

The switch ahs the virtual inface setup now and that has one of the IP address rom the /24.

You now need to plug your server into the switch and in Windows assign the static IP address.  You use the ip address you assign to the switch as the default gateway on each and every server.

Thanks

Michael.

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

The 10 servers are mixed of Linux and Windows. So, you're saying I can't assign the IPs from the switch to the servers but I can assign the IP from the server to the switch. The problem is each server have different user, if I give server 1 the IPs 8.33.8.10, 8.33.8.11, 8.33.8.12, 8.33.8.13, 8.33.8.14, 8.33.8.15 and 8.33.8.211, he can also grab any IPs he want with no restriction. it is the big problem there. is it possible to give port 5 a VLAN2, then assign some IPs from /24 to VLAN2?

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

Ok to that try this again.

if you are using static ip address then every server, pc, switch and router get 1 just 1 ip address config on it.

e.g.

Say the router gets 8.33.8.254/24 - the deafult gateway would be your next hop on the network.

Server 1 gets 8.33.8.10/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 2 gets 8.33.8.11/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 3 gets 8.33.8.12/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 4 gets 8.33.8.13/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 5 gets 8.33.8.14/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 6 gets 8.33.8.15/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

Server 7 gets 8.33.8.211/24 Default gateway is 8.33.8.254

If you do not want to use static addressing then you would use DHCP.  This could be configured on 1 server only and will assign the address to the rest of the server (I would still use a static for the router)

Hope this helps.

Re: Multiple IPs on each port for FESX448-PREM Switch -question#2

This is not going to help my problem though. I just want 1 IP for the router out of 254. just 1 IP for this router and that it. The rest of IPs share among 10 servers. I'm trying to setup dedicated server hosting and each server need to have 10 ip or more. I believed this switch can do this, I have heard even cheapter switch can do it. I just can't find way to make it work. Thanks
