FastIron Edge X, unable to connect via serial port

I'm using a win7 machine with PuTTY.

I'm using the default connection options according to the FOS admin guide v710:

Serial Line: COM1

Speed: 9600

Data bits: 8

Stop bits: 1

Parity: none

Flow Control: none

and for some reason, I still get the PuTTY error message "Unable to open connection to COM1, Unable to open serial port"

I'm using a serial to RJ-45 cable to connect.

Attaching a doc that talks about some steps to troubleshoot serial port connections. This is straight from install guide. You may try these steps and see if it works.

try going to your device manager to double check your com port is actually com1 first. it probably is a different com#

Found out that I really needed to use a serial-to-serial cable connection.  I ended up splicing 2 cables into one because I needed a female end on both ends and I only had 2 male/female ends.
