FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

Hi everyone,

I just recently bought an older Foundry FESX448 (Non PREM) and it just won't start up.  I've been searching for the past week or so trying to figure out what's wrong with this switch.  So I figured I'd start a discussion here.  I have the SXS bin file and have tried several times to TFTP it over to the switch.

The error I'm getting is something like this:

BOOT ERR: Bad image header code (happens when attempting to boot both primary and secondary flash).  Then it drops into what looks like a boot prompt.

"FEX-Boot>show flash" returns something like this:

Primary

FAIL: Not an FEX image

Secondary

FAIL: not an FEX image

I have also tried running "use default" but that didn't do much.

Any ideas?

P.S I will update this thread with actual commands when I have access to it.

Thanks!

Re: FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

Hi zach1,

     the boot code (ver 2.3.01) is too old - by a long way to load 7.2 firmware.  You would need to do multiple upgrades;

First

     load the firmware 2.4.00 (SX?2400a - where ? is R for router S for switch or L base layer3)

then

     update boot rom to 2.5

then update firmware to 3.1

if you check the release note for these version it will say from what version you can upgrade from and to.

Thanks

Michael.

Re: FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the response.  I have both the S and R flash.  I can load both of those into each flash correct?  I will try updating the boot code/rom.  Glad to hear this switch isn't dead just yet.

Thanks again.

Re: FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

Hi zach1,

The R code will not work as the FESX is not the perm version (has an EPROM chip), so only L and S versions will work.  Also you can not upgrade the boot ROM until you get the SXS2400a or SXK2400a firmware on it.

Thanks

Michael.

Re: FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

Ok thanks. The SKS* firmware can do static routes though, correct? That's the only "L2+/L3" feature I absolutely need.

Thanks again!

Re: FESX448 Reg. Boot Issues

No, sorry mate, SXS is layer 2 switch only - you need SXL for static routes.
