VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

Hello Folks,

We have servers populated with a CN4052 10Gb Virtual Fabric Adapters (2 Ports) if we configure each port on Switch Independent mode (vNIC2) we will have 8 vNIC 2 adapter thar are visible on the Server operating system.

Each port physical port is connected to a VDX switch (NOS  6.0.2a )

Exemaple :

  • SRV1:
    • 10G-Port1------>VDX1 Port 1/0/1
    • 10G-Port2------>VDX2 Port 1/0/1

When we enable Switch Independent mode (vNIC2) on the VFA each 10G Port is splitted to 4 vNIC2 ports.

Question how can we manage the vNIC2 ports on the VDX Switchs ?

The switch informations are bellow:

# sh vcs
Config Mode : Local-Only
VCS Mode : Fabric Cluster
VCS ID : 1
Total Number of Nodes : 1
Rbridge-Id WWN Management IP VCS Status Fabric Status HostName

Re: VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

Hi,

I have looked at the information I can find regarding Lenovo vNIC mode at the following URL https://lenovopress.com/tips1164 it states that vNIC mode is supported as follows

Switch Independent Mode (also known as vNIC2 mode), where the adapter works with the following switches:

  • Cisco Nexus B22 Fabric Extender for Flex System
  • Flex System EN4023 10Gb Scalable Switch
  • Flex System Fabric CN4093 10Gb Converged Scalable Switch
  • Flex System Fabric EN4093R 10Gb Scalable Switch
  • Flex System Fabric EN4093 10Gb Scalable Switch
  • Flex System Fabric SI4091 System Interconnect Module
  • Flex System Fabric SI4093 System Interconnect Module
  • Flex System EN4091 10Gb Ethernet Pass-thru and a top-of-rack (TOR) switch

You may need to consider an alternative solution, I would suggest LACP

Regards

Mick

Re: VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

Hi Mick,

Switch Independent Mode (also known as vNIC2 mode), where the adapter works with the following switches: on the list there is EN4023 that we have.

My question some other switch EN4093 (Chapter 18: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/topic/com.lenovo.acc.en4093.doc/EN4093R_AG_8-2.pdf )with vNIC1 and SI4093 (chapter 24: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/topic/com.lenovo.acc.si4093pt.doc/SI4093_AG_8-2.pdf with UFP, have a commande to enable vnic handling within the switch : vnic enable,

does the EN4023 (VDX2740) have the same behaviour to manage the vNIC2 ports ?

From other hand how LACP can help ?

Many Thanks,

Kamal

Re: VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

Hi Kamal,

I am no expert on the EN4023 embedded switch, but I can find no documentation that shows the vNIC configuration mode of EN4023 as you shown configuration is shown for EN4093 (but I do not believe that this is a Brocade VCS switch)

I would suggest that this question can be better answered by Lenovo or Lenovo Community.

Sory LACP will not help in this case, I misunderstood your initial requirement

Regards

Mick

Re: VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

Hi @Mick.Day

please see below.

https://lenovopress.com/tips1070.pdf

The EN4023 is one of the most flexible switches in the blade market and also leverages Brocade’s Virtual
Cluster Switching (VCS) Fabric....

The part numbers for the switches include the following items:
One Lenovo Flex System EN4023 10Gb Scalable Switch
Includes license for 24x 10 GbE dynamic ports
Includes Brocade VCS Ethernet Fabric license

I search for User Guide, but unfortunately cannot find one.

@mkmouline

can you point to right directions where manuals are available for Download ?

Re: VDX NOS 6.0.2a configuration with Switch Independent mode (vNIC2)

[ Edited ]

Kamal,

I found the PDF you mentioned here, and If I understand you correct, you whant to configure vNIC on the server where are connected to EN4023 = VDX 2740

Is correct ?

accordly the tips1070.pdf page 5:

VNIC technology that is switch independent can also be run through the EN4023.

->I am afraid that they are the only documents available at this time.

VDX-2740 is supported till NOS 6.x and as per my opinion you can use as reference the native Brocade NOS Documentation.
