Today, a fresh new set of University Development Program (UDP) participants – affectionately known as “Newbies” – will graduate and officially begin their journey within the ranks of Brocade. Like any graduation ceremony, the moment is both bittersweet, yet full of promise. I’m so proud of these graduates and all that they’ve accomplished in the weeks since they started the program. I’m always amazed at the transformation that occurs between Day 1 and the end of the three-week curriculum. It’s rewarding to see how a program that started out as the brainchild of our CEO, Mike Klayko, has evolved into a formalized program that consistently attracts fresh talent and helps recent college graduates gain a solid start in the working world.

Giving back to the community is part of the program – UDP 18 participants volunteer for RAFT on June 21, 2012.

A recent FOX Business article raised the issue of the “race to recruit” in Silicon Valley and how more of the older/traditional companies are having trouble attracting top talent when up against the Facebooks and Googles of the world. This is definitely something that Brocade is keeping close tabs on as well and one of the reasons we continue to invest in UDP. The fact is – and always has been – in order to compete in a global market and continue to drive technology innovation, we need smart people. At Brocade, we see UDP as a way to provide opportunities to new grads, while nurturing top talent as a way to plan for the future.

Since the program’s inception four years ago, I’ve seen many Newbies come through our doors and they all exhibit a level of enthusiasm and excitement that’s not only refreshing, but very encouraging. As part of the program, UDP participants must develop and present a plan that solves a current business issue and there have even been many instances where a plan originating from UDP was put into practice. The level of ingenuity and creativity exhibited through this process is truly inspiring. This new crop of talent represents the future of our workforce and if this class is any indication of things yet to come, we’re definitely headed in the right direction.

Congratulations, UDP 18 – and best of luck to you in all your endeavors here at Brocade and beyond.
