Pursuit of the NFV ‘Killer App’ Begins at the Edge

The endless search for reaching the so-called critical mass for NFV adoption continues unabated well through this year and likely into the next, even though previous and more optimistic forecasts had the industry reaching this mythical milestone much earlier. Our view on this remains consistent in that there are two major issues that both the vendor and the operator/carrier communities have to solve together in order to make NFV the de facto networking architecture for service provider networks and applications in this century.

 

One, the industry has to embrace more common, model-driven, and open architectures to eliminate a phenomenon we like to refer to as “islands of infrastructure”. These islands are created when vendors and operators focus too much on solving problems for their unique environments, which result in an over-reliance on proprietary techniques and technologies. Of course, operators have to adapt any new technology to be suitable and relevant for their specific use cases. However, given the global and universal nature of mobile computing and telephony today, there is much to be said for the benefits of applying common, model-driven methods that apply broadly to many use cases as in the case of the Open Source MANO initiative, in which both RIFT.io and Brocade are active participants

 

Two, the industry has to fight the urge to “boil the ocean”, as IBM was fond of saying, when it comes to identifying the use cases that deserve the most focus in terms of resources and innovation. Management guru Geoffrey Moore might refer to this as the need to apply the bowling pin strategy where the industry identifies one or two specific niches (or use cases in this instance) that naturally leads to more easily knocking down other niches and use cases. The good news is that in the case of NFV, the first two bowling pins have been identified and are ready to be knocked down: network virtualization and the evolution of the customer edge through virtual CPE, or vCPE. In fact, according to SDxCentral’s 2015 market forecast for NFV technologies, the adoption of network virtualization and vCPE will account for almost half of the expected vendor revenue by 2020 (source: SDxCentral reportrequires registration and download)

 

It’s with these megatrends in mind that RIFT.io and Brocade will partner on a webcast called Open Architecture for Branch Services in the Cloud and on Premises. Our two companies will discuss the ways operators can seamlessly deploy and orchestrate virtual network functions (VNFs) and services for the branch as both cloud-based and on-premise solutions. Specifically, we’ll delve into how operators can operationalize new service offerings and create a path to cost savings, rapid service monetization, and competitive differentiation.

 

In this webcast, RIFT.io and Brocade will share the results and our learnings from having integrated the Brocade vRouter, deployed as a VNF, with RIFT.ware’s network service orchestration capabilities that have been tested and proven for both on-premises branch and cloud-based deployment scenarios. We’ll also provide a solution demo highlight key capabilities such as:

 

  • Achieving robustness and scalability for carrier-grade operations using virtualized network services for vCPE.
  • Ways to accelerate deployment methods to onboard VNFs such as the Broade vRouter and its vCPE operating system, which can be used as a lightweight virtual infrastructure manager within commodity CPE hardware without compromising key features such as core routing, network address translation, and firewall functionality.
  • Specific benefits of using an open architecture approach to interfaces in order to ensure interoperability and rapid operationalization of services.
  • Easy ways to roll out popular branch service use cases such as VPN as a Service (VPNaaS) for carrier environments and software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) solutions for enterprises, both which address the need to connect and secure communications between branches and corporate/SP data centers.

 

In general, the webcast will highlight how our two companies are collaborating closely to fulfill the true promise of NFV – to simplify and automate many aspects of building and managing today’s network infrastructure at a fraction of the time and costs compared to previous methods.
