Brocade Mobile CTO, Kevin Shatzkamer, recently provided a radio show preview of what to expect at Mobile World Congress this year in Barcelona. One of the big themes is expected to be 5G along with the services and new business models it will enable for the mobile industry.
We are all familiar with the existing challenges mobile operators face with pricing pressures and the costs associated with keeping up with the increasing network traffic. 5G is the mobile industries hope to help fix many of these challenges. However, 5G isn’t planned to be ready for implementation until 2020, so what should mobile operators do until then?
Brocade doesn’t believe that mobile operators should and don’t have to wait until 2020, they can start the path to 5G today with existing NFV and SDN technology that is 5G-enabled. Mobile operators can leverage virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC), vRouter and other virtual technologies today to help alleviate some of the current network challenges. In fact, our customers are looking at how these technologies can help them with 4G networks today and will be sustainable and relevant when 5G is ready in few years.
In a recent survey conducted by Heavy Reading and sponsored by Brocade and Coriant, over 50% of respondents stated they expected to begin deploying vEPC technology commercially in their network. This is primarily to help solve current network challenges, whether it be scale or the need for new services. The key point here is that the time is now to look at beginning your network transformation to support 5G services.

At MWC, Brocade will be there showing how we are ‘Your Open Network to 5G’. Our mobile strategy is simple: to help mobile operators re-architect their networks to support 5G services and deliver higher agility and performance at a fraction of the cost of traditional networks. We deliver this strategy by simplifying the network infrastructure and making it possible for operators to begin the transformation to 5G today. Our SDN and NFV technology provide the foundation for mobile operators to re-define how they architect their networks to address the challenges and enable new services including IoT, M2M, high definition video and virtual mobile networking.
However, Brocade doesn’t deliver on this mobile strategy alone. Our open standards and open API philosophy enable us to collaborate with a variety of other partners to build multi-vendor solutions that help to solve today’s challenges. Our mobile partners will be on display inside the Brocade booth through a variety of demonstrations. Likewise, Brocade will be inside many of our partner’s booth. Some of these partners include: Coriant, Openet, Rift.io, Metaswitch, HP Enterprise, Ciena, IBM, Intel, Viavi, and VMware.
The demonstrations we are planning include virtual mobile network solutions, network visibility and analytics and virtual CPE solutions. The planned demonstrations include:
We are excited about MWC and look forward to meeting you there to tell you more about what Brocade is doing in the mobile space and discussing how you can begin the path to 5G today. To see a demo at the show, go to our MWC site and request a meeting and someone will be in touch to schedule a demonstration with you soon.
