too much 'Time BB credit zero' and 'Invalid ordered set'

Hi all,

The server and video editing workstations lost the path to storage target frequently.

I got some port stats from switch.

I am sorry but I haven't review your logs. Too much to read ...

Can you post which device and which speed is configured on ports which have a high Invalid Order Set value?

In case of an 8Gbit device have a play with the portcfgfillword command. Some 8 gbit devices will produce an increased number of invalid order sets whatever you set. This sould not affect the traffic flow or throught put. If you switch to 4 gbit this errors should be away.

The ports with Time BB credit zero values have a high load. The switch port is waiting to get responce of the device on the other end of the cable.

To fix this: Reduce the load. If you have no discards in the SAN this is not really a problem.

Here in this forum you will find some threads about these topics.

Hi ,

HP Workstations with QLogic QLE 2460 HBA have invalid ordered sets . The OS is windows xp sp2,and the HBA driver version is 9.1.4.10 (the latest version from QLogic website). 

There are 6 switches(5000 ,5100,300,200E), 90 workstations,10 storage systems .

If we add more ISLs or trunking, the number of  'Time BB credit zero' should reduce to zero ?

Hello Simon,

buffer credit zero is on a low rate a not an issue. If you have a very high rate than it can cause an issue. Did you see any discards of class 3 frame on the fabric? If yes than you have a massive performance impact on the hosts.
If you have no discards on your SAN then you should have some time to think about your design.

Adding ISL can reduce the BB credit time if you see it on ISLs. I assume that you have issues between the hosts and storage systems.
Very often the arrays can not deliver the information as quick as host is requesting.
This happens if the load is too high or the queues are not balaced between hosts and storage. Too many host requests and too long response times of the LUNs cause these BB credit zero times.
You can ask your self at which point you would like to start your investigation.

Now it gets difficult for me to give an advice or recommendation.
I am not famillar with your design. But adding ISLs means bringing in some more buffers as a parking place for frames.
Try to identify the most critical boxes and if they are not on the same switch try to put them on the same switches.

If you do not know when and which port is causing traffic try to use FabricWatch or MRTG or SANhealth to monitor your ports. As well bottlenck detection can help as well to find some devices which causes may problems.

did you clear the errorstats of the SAN switches from time to time? I am  not sure how long time was between your port capture and the last reset.

Please clear all the counter with statsclear on all switchtes.

Wait for 30 minutes or any other interval and run a porterrshow on all switches and portstatsshow on your critical ports to get a baseline.

Check the ports with errors and collect a portstatsshow on the affected ports.

This will may help to find your issue.

I cleared the errstats ,portstatsclear N. I saw 0 errors of the ports which connect to storages(00Smiley Very Happy0:23:XX:YY:ZZ) .The Workstation ports have invalid ordered set and time bb credit zero errors . The ISL ports have time bb credit zero errors,a very high rate.

I don't know the next step i can do............

Disable QoS on the affected E-Ports and use portcfglongdisatnce with the LE option.

QoS  was off . The switches are in the same buildings.

We chanded the topology. The problem  happened again ,but not very often.

I am a storage technician, not a san guy.

Hello Simon,

did you change the E-Port mode into LE?

PNG file did not show the correct topology of the switches. Can you please explain if it is a triangle or more like a "long line"?

Can you explain which problem is still there?

Discards or high value of credit zero?

Please say if you have discards on the ISL ports or on device ports.

What is the LE-port mode ? I don't know about that.

The topology is more like a long line. What should it be ?

The problems are , the host lost the connectivity to the storage device randomly ; high value of credit zero on the ISL ports ; high value of invalid ordered set on host ports ; some discards on ISL ports,host ports,device ports ; some encoding errors on host ports .

SAN problem is complex .
