Windows 7 x64 SAN Boot.

Good Afternoon All.

I'm having an issue trying to remote boot a Windows 7 Client.

The switch is correctly setup, as the 825 HBA BIOS is installed, with the correct LUN presented.

The problem occurs when I load the Driver Update Disk files when trying to install the OS.

The install dialog bar just keeps looping after I select the HBA adapter files.

The above install works fine if I try the same DUD files with a Server 2008 R2 OS.

Can anyone shed any light on the DUD process, is Windows 7 remote boot even supported?

I have had a quick look at the "bfad.inf" install file and there is a reference to "NTamd64.6.1" which I believe is a reference to Windows 7.

Is there a modification needed to "bfad.inf" to allow the remote booting / install of a Windows 7 x64 client?

Hello Antonio & thankyou for your prompt reply.

I tried the same install process with the updated version 3.1.0 DUD files & the I'm afraid its the same result.

After many many hours of unsuccessfull attempts I managed to boot the Windows X64 SP1 client from the SAN.

I had to build a Custom Windows 2008 R2 install ISO that allowed the default signed 2008 R2 Brocade drivers to reveal the storage / LUN, then install the W7 SP1 x64 install.wim.

Basic process:

On a W7 x64 SP1, fully patched client:

Downlad & install WAIK & WAIK update.

Commands:

set IMAGEXBIN="C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64\imagex.exe"
set OSCDIMGBIN="C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64\oscdimg.exe"

copy C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64\oscdimg.exe c:\

- unpack both X64 & 2008R2 Isos to c:\source\x64 & c:\source\2008

- let's gather the win7 64bit Ultimaer installer
%IMAGEXBIN% /export c:\source\x64\sources\install.wim 4 c:\source\2008\sources\install.wim "Windows 7 ULTIMATE x64"


- mount & copy the EULA for boot.wim


%IMAGEXBIN% /mountrw c:\source\x64\sources\boot.wim 2 c:\win7mount
%IMAGEXBIN% /mountrw c:\source\2008\sources\boot.wim 2 c:\servermount


xcopy /E c:\win7Mount\sources\License c:\serverMount\sources\License
rem commit the changes
%IMAGEXBIN% /unmount /commit c:\serverMount

%IMAGEXBIN% /unmount c:\win7Mount


rem copy the EULA for installing from within windows.

xcopy /E  c:\source\x64\sources\License c:\source\2008\sources\License

copy c:\source\x64\sources\*.clg  c:\source\2008\sources\

del c:\source\2008\sources\ei.cfg

rem create bootable disk

oscdimg -bC:\Source\2008\boot\etfsboot.com -u2 -h -m -lcrap c:\source\2008 c:\dest2008isonodriver.iso

Burn the iso, or boot it from a USB key.
