Re: Trying to understand what max NPIV nodes on 48K should be

As far as NPIV nodes are using last 8 bits of FC address, there should be a theorical limit of 253 nodes (0x00 reserved for non NPIV/loop devices, 0x80 for shared area addressing).

Kind regards,

Re: Trying to understand what max NPIV nodes on 48K should be

Default value is 126. In general, any value between 0 and 255 is allowed. It can be configured with PortCfgNPIVPort --setloginlimit or with configure command in earlier Fabric OS versions.

Depending on blade type, Virtual Fabrics setup and addressing mode, some other restrictions apply. For further details please refer to Chapter 13, Administering NPIV, in Fabric OS 6.4 Administrator's Guide (53-1001763-01).

Maximum practical value depends on the throughput requirements of your hosts. Oversubscription ratios between 7:1 and 3:1 are commonly referred as "best practice" values. This might or might not fit well in a particular NPIV setup.
