Link Utilization

Is there any way, we can monitor and know the utilization of the ISL link other than FM or DCFM.

Re: Link Utilization

Cacti or MRTG are options for free to monitor links.

the question is here:

"portperfshow" is not a Application, this is a Command and can't monitor nothing.

Re: Link Utilization

Hi GK,

both tools use snmp to query the interface stats or any other switch information you want.

These tools tools are using rrd databases to store the data. You have to create some datacollection files and run them with cron every minute or every five minutes. The rrd tool creates 4h 6h 24h 4 weeks or a 1 year graph of the collected data. RRD has some maitenance task to aggregate your collected data to archive that data files will not grow. Finally you need a webserver where all information are displayed.

Both tools are not limited to snmp you can create a custom script which delivers the information of your interest.

Both tools are very common for network statistics graphs. If you have some network guys in your company ask them if they can provide you some help.

please check the following links:

http://www.cacti.net/

http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/

You have to invest some work to get it configured and running. It is not a klick next next job. If you have some unix knowledge that it should be a easy task for you. I monitor my free ports and the performance on each FC port as an example.

One important think is that you have to take care about high utilized links. If you monitor the 32bit SNMP counter for TX and RX on a 4 or 8 gbit switch at a 5 minutes interval than you see not the real through put. Your graphs will be much lower that it is.

So you have to find the correct 64 bit counters and make sure that mrtg or cacti will manage the values correct. This depends on your FOS and switch model.

Brocade provides a SNMP MIB document for each FOS code. This is helpful to understand the MIB.

If you have any other questions please give me a message. If you are happy with my answer please mark the thread as correct or answered.

Thanks,

Andreas

Re: Link Utilization

you can run SAN Health for certain time. That will help you too.

somebody says

"portperfshow" is not a Application, this is a Command and can't monitor nothing.

I got it, can't monitor nothing means can monitor everything.

Try portperfshow and you can monitor the ports where ISL is connected.

If you have DCFM, then you can get the historical data. But u have mentioned which are the tools except FM &DCFM

Run SAN health for 24 hrs and send the.BSH file to brocade in shadmin@brocade.com mail id and get the report, there you can see the min and max port utilization.

for more about command, pls find attached FO Scmnd ref guide.or u can download according to ur FOS from Brocade site.

Pls do let us know if more help neded.

pls mark the thread if it helped u
