Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

Greetings all

I'm having a strange issue when I performed a Fabric OS upgrade on a Brocade 3016 (Blade Chassis switch).

The Fabric OS was v5.3.0a I then performed the upgrade to V5.3.2a everything seem to go fine expect the secondary partion never got V5.3.2a written to it. I then performed the firmwarerestore command. And now the primary partition is v5.3.0a and the secondary is v5.3.2a

I've power cycled the switch from the blade chassis magement module and reset the switch back to defaults , but I still get the inconsistent versions.

Anyone got any ideas got I'm out

Thanks

David

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

firmwarerestore can only be run when you have during firmwaredownload disabled the firmwarecommit.

i would procede as follow: ( at your risk )

try again "firmwaredownload -c" to the preview Release 5.3.0a

if the download is successfully, reboot the switch, and run firmwarecommit, this procedure must work.

BTW, i know this problem with the 3016, and the problem is here, so i believe...... you have download the FOS 5.3.2a with the -c option.

is correct ?

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

Hi TechHelp

Here is what happens when I try and re download the Fabric OS on the switch.

firmwaredownload -c
Server Name or IP Address: xxxxxxx
User Name: dump
File Name: V5.3.2a/release.plist
Network Protocol(1-auto-select, 2-FTP, 3-SCP) : 2
Password:
Checking system settings for firmwaredownload...
Protocol selected: FTP
Trying address-->AF_INET IP: xxx.xxx.xx.xx, flags : 2
System settings check passed.

You can run firmwaredownloadstatus to get the status
of this command.

This command will cause a warm/non-disruptive boot on the switch,
but will require that existing telnet, secure telnet or SSH sessions
be restarted.

Do you want to continue : y
Firmware is being downloaded to the switch. This step may take up to 30 minutes.
Preparing for firmwaredownload...
Cannot start download before the new image is committed. Please run firmwarecommit, or firmwarerestore first.
Firmware download failed - New image has not been committed. Run firmwarecommit or firmwarerestore first and then try firmwaredownload. (0x1e)
SanSwitch3:USERID> firmwarecommit
Validating the filesystem ...
missing    /etc/fabos/auth.0.conf
missing    /etc/fabos/auth.1.conf
missing    /etc/fabos/authutil.1.conf
missing    /etc/raslog.conf
Firmwarecommit failed because Filesystem is inconsistent.

Any other ideas

Thanks

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

David,

First, see please my Preview post, i wrote here as follow:

--- try again "firmwaredownload -c" to the preview Release 5.3.0a

and not restart the firmwaredownlaod now with 5.3.2a

i see in your last just posted threads,  you have restart the download with File Name: V5.3.2a/release.plist

Second, i wait of my question as mentioned im my preview post:

As your have upgrade from v5.3.0a to 5.3.2a which was failed, have you started the firmwaredownload with or whitout the "-c" attribute ?

And finally, with the firmwareshow command, can you see both Partition? If yes, are both available.

post the result.

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

Hi Techhelp24

Here is the process in which I am trying to restore the Fabric OS , but it looks like the partitions are just bouncing around the Fabric OS from Secondary to Primary and nothing sticks.

SanSwitch3:USERID> firmwaredownload -c
Server Name or IP Address: xxx.xxx.xx.xx
User Name: dump
File Name: V5.3.0a/release.plist
Network Protocol(1-auto-select, 2-FTP, 3-SCP) : 2
Password:
Checking system settings for firmwaredownload...
Protocol selected: FTP
Trying address-->AF_INET IP: 192.168.39.21, flags : 2
System settings check passed.

You can run firmwaredownloadstatus to get the status
of this command.

This command will cause a warm/non-disruptive boot on the switch,
but will require that existing telnet, secure telnet or SSH sessions
be restarted.

firmwarerestore
The system is rebooting now!! After reboot, firmwarecommit will be started and the partitions will be restored to the original firmware.

SanSwitch3:USERID>
SanSwitch3:USERID>
SanSwitch3:USERID> firmwareshow
Appl     Primary/Secondary Versions
------------------------------------------
FOS      v5.3.2a
         v5.3.0a

Thanks

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions

David,

i note from your preview Post follow:

--- I've power cycled the switch from the blade chassis magement module and reset the switch back to defaults , but I still get the inconsistent versions.

I think this is the problem, so you need a net_install image to restore the FOS.

You can obtain this File from brocade with a Active Maintenance contract.

Re: Inconsistent firmware versions on partitions - Resovled

Managed to resovle this by using the following command.

firmwaredownload -sf

Then "firmwarecommit"

Switch is now running FABOS 5.3.2a on both partitions , one switch down one to go
