Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

I have a Silkworm 200E 4gb switch

I need to connect two HP 8/12 chassis fiber switches to it.

I believe I have a fabric license installed on the switches and I have everything setup correctly(again I think)

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

backstory

I am a systems/network guy who has no fiber SAN experience but I took on this project when our lead admin left several weeks ago.

Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

If all are set up correctly, it's just a matter of connecting the switches with cables.

But: often when one has two switches in a chassi the switches are in two different fabrics - meaning you don't want to connect them. And one would have to connect a cable between the 8/12 switches for them to be connected in the first place.

fabricshow in the CLI shows how the fabric is set up.

Unfortunately 4Gb FC switches can't do virtual fabric so you can't split your 200E in to virtual switches.

It's a good thing to have two fabrics - good for fault isolation and when making upgrades.

If you do have two fabrics you can connect the 200E to one fabric and get it working - and when it's all good there you can get another 200E and hook it up to the 200E.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

so we only have one 200e in that rack.

and both switches in that chassis would be on one fabric.

All of my ports in the chassis switches are persistant down.

I believe I have all my licensing setup correctly.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

this is the output from the switch in the chassis

  17  17   0b1100   id    N8   Mod_Inv     FC  "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"(POD License Not Assigned Yet)

  18  18   0b1200   id    N8   Mod_Inv     FC  "Speed Mismatch / Incompatible SFP"(POD License Not Assigned Yet)

any ideas?

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

Hi there,

It looks like you have no license for those ports.

Can you post which licenses the switch has? (command licenseshow)

Also the number of ports you're currently using (command switchshow)

You may need to use a different port.

Also, can you post the output of command "sfpshow 17 -f" and "sfpshow 18 -f" in order to see the SFP inserted, because 200e only supports up to 4G SFPs.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

That output was from port 17 and 18 on the HP 8/12c brocade SAN switch.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

On the one hand, its seems that those SFPs installed in the HP switch are not fully supported (do you have a different one to try instead?)

On the other, can you post the output of licenseshow --port ?

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

I had to change out the brocade switches with some known good working switches.

The issue was indeed incompatible SFP modules.  THe mod were 2,4,8 gb models.

Re: Connecting a Silkworm 200e to a HP 8/12

Glad you got it working.

The oddity is that the 200E has NO ports with POD activated. The first 8 or 12 should have been activated without a license. Also, your license numbers that are showing also appear a little off to me. I don't usually see so many zeros...
