two ports on same vlan wont talk

The place i work vor has a brocade 48 port switch

it's layer 2 as in switch rather than router.

It is using two vlans.

vlan 2 and vlan 100

port 25 is dual mode and tagged  on both vlans

port 35 is dual mode and tagged on both vlans

4 additional ports are untagged and on vlan 2

the rest are on vlan 100

we have a nas drive plugged into port 25.

it's ip is 192.168.1.50/24

all machines on both vlans can see it

We have a raspberry pi used as a ntp server on port 35

it's ip is 192.168.1.22/24

all ports on vlan 100 can see it but none on vlan 2 can.

There is no firewall in the way.

Anyone know why vlan 2 can't see it?

Thank you.

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

Hello,

Could you help providing the following?

1) The switch model and Firmware running

2) THe VLAN config and ports config?

3) The MAC address table of ports 25 and 35.

4) The Mac Addresses of both the NAS and Raspberry pi.

5) Is the raspberry pi sending tagged or untagged traffic?

Kind Regards,

Os

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

the switch is the foundry fastiron gs 648

firmware FGS07202a

although the secondary flash has FGSL07202a

vlans are both basic port vlans

The mac address info i can't get until i go back in

the raspberry pi sends untagged traffic

Why are the mac addresses important?

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

The MAC addresses are used for Layer-2 communication.  Instead of packets, at Layer-2 we use frames, which have an attribute that can be set specifying the 802.1Q VLAN.  This is what we call TAGGING.

When you have a port tagged in multiple VLANs it it can send/receive tagged traffic for any of those VLANS; essentially, it is a trunk.

In contrast, dual-mode allows the port to send/receive both tagged an untagged traffic.  That said, if you do not specify, dual-mode automatcially sets the port(s) to receive/send untagged traffic on the default VLAN.

I have NOT seen your config nor have you pasted a "show vlan," so it is incredibly difficult to try and answer your questions.

For example, if you did just a plain "dual-mode" you may have one interface dropping all untagged traffic into its own unused vlan.  Might be something like "dual-mode 2" to resove the issue, but we cannot help without your config and a "show vlan"

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

Hey thewap,

in your first message you said port 25 and port 35 are both tagged and dual-mode. In your running-config is port 32 tagged and dual-mode!

Which is the correct port?

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

I can see an entry from port 35 in your MAC-Address-Table but not from port 32.

I think you just configured the wrong port.

Re: two ports on same vlan wont talk

thatnkks for that. one of the techies had been fiddling moving things around. now everything is in thee correct port and the problem remains. we've tracked it down to the rasperry pi not suppporting vlan unless patched. so the switch wasn't the problem at all.

Thank you for your support. I'm most greatful.
