How to configure adaptive rate-limit on superx

I am trying to configure my FastIron SuperX to limit bandwidth to specific Vlan's. I want to provide the VLAN T1 (1544k) speed and allow for bursts of traffic. I have configured and adaptive rate-limit policy through an ACL and have had some success, but it is not what I am looking for. As I change the values of the four values (cir, cbs, pir, pbs) I do see some changes but the bandwidth is still capable of bursting way above the 1544k limit I have set until I change it to a fixed traffic policy. I have searched for some examples that limit to a certain bandwidth, but haven't found anything. My current traffic policy is:

traffic-policy bw1544 rate-limit adaptive cir 768 cbs 600 pir 1544 pbs 1000 exceed-action permit-at-low-pri

I have used a tool at speedtest.net to measture bandwidth on the VLAN. I am uploading at 2.2mb and downloading at 2.0mb. I can kick off a download stream from netflix and effect other VLANs speed. I have a 3mb internet connection. Keep in mind if I change the policy to a fixed value it works just fine. I just don't want to drop packets.

Committed Information Rate (CIR) The guaranteed kilobit rate of inbound traffic that is allowed on a port

.

Committed Burst Size (CBS) The number of bytes per second allowed in a burst before some packets will exceed the committed information rate. Larger bursts are more likely to

exceed the rate limit. The CBS must be a value greater than zero (0).

Brocade recommends that this value be equal to or greater than the size of

the largest possible IP packet in a stream              .So for non jumbo frmaes then set to say 1600

Peak Information Rate (PIR) The maximum kilobit rate for inbound traffic on a port. The PIR must be

equal to or greater than the CIR.

Peak Burst Size (PBS) The number of bytes per second allowed in a burst before all packets will

exceed the peak information rate. The PBS must be a value greater than

zero (0).

Brocade recommends that this value be equal to or greater than the size of the largest possible IP packet in the stream. So for non jumbo frmaes then set to say 1600

Your policy should look like the below

traffic-policy bw1544 rate-limit adaptive cir 768 cbs 1600 pir 1544 pbs 1600 exceed-action permit-at-low-pri

Also what version of code are you running on the SuperX - please do a 'show ver' to find out.

I will try the edited traffic-policy and test. Do you think speedtest.net is a good method to test? What would you suggest?

Hi,

     Firstly I would recoomend go to version 7.2.00a as there is a lot of fixes and upgrades done in version 7 that I can see from the release notes..

     As for testing I have not used that site for this type of testing.  I would recommend if you can get your hands on a Ixia or the like - that would be the way to go.
