Difference between flash image and boot image

When I go to the downloads for my FCX648S-ADV switch there are a few types: firmware, images, and boot.

When I go to the device information in the gui I see Flash Primary Image, Secondary Image, and boot image. Also I see a Running Image version.

What are the differences between the 4 types? I want to get each of them at the latest stable release. Right now the primary and secondary flash are at 07.2.02T7f3 and the boot image is at 07.0.01T7f5. The Running image version is 07.0.01bT7f3. I don't see anywhere how to update the firmware or even seen what it's at.

Thanks!

Re: Difference between flash image and boot image

I know as Example from Old McDATA Product, Boot Image is the Boot Loder, and Flash Image is the Image with OS.

I think this is the same for Foundry Product.

In some case and Upgrade level, Newest Flas Image required first Boot-Image Upgrade.

In most case is descriptedas well in Release Notes.

FOS based Switches - SAN Switches - Upgrade in one way both, Boot-Prom and OS

Re: Difference between flash image and boot image

Is Simple.

Boot Image, is the Boot Loader / Boot Prom

Flash Image, both Primary and Secondary are the partition for OS, in Ethernet Based Switches is called "NOS"

AFAIK, NEW NOS Package based Product contained both Boot Prom and OS Image.

Re: Difference between flash image and boot image

So are you saying it's not odd that they are different versions? Why is running SW version not the same as primary or secondary? why does one unit in stack have different version name than other?

Correct, boot Image and Flash Image have in most case different Release, this is not a Issue.

--->>>Why is running SW version not the same as primary or secondary?

from screen you upload here, I see both Primary. and Secondery. partition have the same release.

--->>>why does one unit in stack have different version name than other?

I cannot see you Stack, and not see any details in this Thread.

The Question is, are all other Switches in the Stack same Models/Type, and have all the same NOS Release ?

Re: Difference between flash image and boot image

See this Example from Configuration Guide, as you can see BootROM have different Version as the Flash Image

Determining the boot image version running on the device

To determine the boot image running on a device, enter the show flash command at any level of the

CLI. The following shows an example output.

Brocade#show flash

Active Management Module (Slot 9):

Compressed Pri Code size = 3613675, Version 03.1.00aT3e3 (sxr03100a.bin)

Compressed Sec Code size = 2250218, Version 03.1.00aT3e1 (sxs03100a.bin)

Compressed BootROM Code size = 524288, Version 03.0.01T3e5

Code Flash Free Space = 9699328

Standby Management Module (Slot 10):

Compressed Pri Code size = 3613675, Version 03.1.00aT3e3 (sxr03100a.bin)

Compressed Sec Code size = 2250218, Version 03.1.00aT3e1 (sxs03100a.bin)

Compressed BootROM Code size = 524288, Version 03.0.01T3e5

Code Flash Free Space = 524288

The boot code version is shown in bold type

Re: Difference between flash image and boot image

If you click on the first image I shared, unit 1 in the stack is running 07.2.02T7f1 while unit 2 is running 07.2.02eT7f1. I have tried running "copy flash flash primary" and still unit 1 has a different version.

Also, below is my device update again. SW: Version is 07.2.02eT7f1 while flash and primary are 07.2.02T7f1 (missing the "e").

I think this missing "e" you mention it's not a behavior, this refer just to SW Version.

I think Michael Schipp "mschipp" is the right one here in the Community for such Details.
