BigIron RX Management Module

Hi there,

I'm a newbie, both in this community and in the Brocade world!

Achieving this chance to work in a project with Brocade switching layer, I have few questions regarding the BigIron RX-8 switch, which is set to be our core switches:

1. Ordering BI-RX-8-AC system, we will have Chassis, 2 SFM-3s, 1 Management Module and 2 AC PSs. The question is what's the type of Management Module? 512M or 2G?

2. What's primarily the formula for choosing a 512M or 2G module?

3. For power supplies, I know I can have 4 of them where 2 is included in the bundle. But I wonder how many do I need for the base usage and how can I have N+1 redundancy?

Hi Ali,

     First welcome to the Brocade community.

     Answer : BI-RX-8-AC ships with RX-BI-MR (512MB)

2. What's primarily the formula for choosing a 512M or 2G module?

     Answer : Increases the size of the routing table - e.g. only needed if you want to hold the full global BGP route table

3. For power supplies, I know I can have 4 of them where 2 is included in the bundle. But I wonder how many do I need for the base usage and how can I have N+1 redundancy?

     Answer :  This will depend on how many line cards and what type of line cards you are also installing in the RX.

For the power if you can give me a list of what you are thinking of getting I can work it out for you.

Also would recommend getting the 3rd SFM for the system.

Actually we will have 3* SFM-3 and 1* RX-BI4XG + 1* RX-BI-16XG + 1* RX-BI24F + 2* RX-BI-MR .

Hi Ali,

     Looking at your config (without the 16XG card) you easily fit in a single power supply, so the two included PS's will give N+1.

     However I do not know the power draw for the 16 port 10G card.  If I use 5 x 4 port 10G in the config you would need 3 power supplies for N+1.

     This gives you two options;

          1. Add a third PS to be safe or

          2. Check with a Brocade SE to confirm the config as they have a power calculator (mine is old, thus is why I do not have the 16 port card).
