7800 remote read performance

Hi All.

I have two sites connected with two 7800 (one per  site) and I have a virtual tape library on each site. Both 7800 have  6.4.2b with tape pipelining and fast read are enabled. Compression is  disabled.

The write performance is what should be expected (up to 60MB/s  with several requests) for the line in use for both sites (site A  writing on site B and site B writing on site A). The read performance is very poor, max of 3MB/s.

Reading information on Brocade I found a possible problem on this:

Defect ID: DEFECT000322036

Summary: Brocade 7800 Tape read pipelining not working due to SILI and variable lenght settings.

Symptom: Read throughput does not improve after enabling tape pipelining

The problem is that this error was corrected 6.4.1a and should still be corrected in version 6.4.2b.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure,..... but i think if yor are using FCIP, compression must be enabled and payload must be set.

another question, what is the distance between both location ? and what License are Installed ?

Re: 7800 remote read performance

I've tried several settings for compression with the same end result.

The sites are about 250Km apart.

The current licensing on the 7800s is:

- Entreprise Upgrade

- Ficon Cup Licence

- Advanced Extended

Re: 7800 remote read performance

Hi,

--->>> - Advanced Extended

for 7800 TWO Optional different "Advanced" License are available.

Advanced Extension: Enables FCIP Trunking and Adaptive Rate Limiting

Advanced Accelerator for FICON: Accelerates IBM zGM, mainframe tapes, and z/OS host connection to Teradata systems over distance

see this note

Footnote 2: The Advanced Extension License enables support for tape read and write pipelining, FICON CUP,

and Advanced Accelerator for FICON. Both FICO features require an optional license.

Re: 7800 remote read performance

The correct licenses installed are:

Local 7800:

    Extended Fabric license

    Integrated Routing license

    Enhanced Group Management license

    7800 Upgrade license

Remote 7800

    Integrated Routing license

    Enhanced Group Management license

    7800 Upgrade license

As another update, I received some information from the  VTL manufacturer. They want that the 7800s be upgraded to 6.4.1_fcoe1.  The release notes for this firmware version only support DCX without any  reference what so ever to the 7800...

Re: 7800 remote read performance

I'm a bit confused about you hardware

can you post here please from "switchshow" output of Switch Type ?

--->>>They want that the 7800s be upgraded to 6.4.1_fcoe1.

is not supported !

--->>>The release notes for this firmware version only support DCX without any  reference what so ever to the 7800...

That is Correct,

Supported Switches

FOS v6.4.1_fcoe is supported only on DCX and DCX-4S platforms operating in Interopmode 0 (Brocade Native

Mode).

--->>> Remote 7800

    Integrated Routing license

    Enhanced Group Management license

    7800 Upgrade license

Accordly yout Post, Remote site don't have any Extended License. Extended License is required on both site in order to create a Tunnel.

But you can create tunnels (two) without any additional license.

Here is the switchshow for both MP-7800.

Local Switch:
switchName:    7800_A
switchType:    83.3
switchState:    Online
switchMode:    Native
switchRole:    Principal
switchDomain:    100
switchId:    fffc64
switchWwn:
zoning:        ON
switchBeacon:    OFF
FC Router:    OFF
FC Router BB Fabric ID:    2
Address Mode:    0

Remote switch:
switchName:    7800_B
switchType:    83.3
switchState:    Online
switchMode:    Native
switchRole:    Subordinate
switchDomain:    104
switchId:    fffc68
switchWwn:

switchBeacon:    OFF
FC Router:    ON
FC Router BB Fabric ID:    2
Address Mode:    0

I'm puzzekd about your reference to the foot note 2 stating that for the use of tape pipeline you have to have the Advanced Extension license?

The references I found only refer the need for the 7800 Upgrade license.
From the "Fabric OS FCIP Administrator’s Guide"
The 7800 upgrade license to enable full hardware capabilities, full FCIP tunnel capabilities,
support of advanced capabilities like open systems tape pipelining (OSTP), FICON CUP support,
and separately licensed advanced FICON acceleration capabilities.

From the "Fabric OS Administrator’s Guide"
This license enables full hardware capabilities on the Brocade 7800
base switch, increasing the number of Fibre Channel ports from four
to sixteen and the number of GbE ports from two to six. A Brocade
7800 switch with the Upgrade License also supports up to eight FCIP
tunnels instead of two and supports advanced capabilities like tape
read/write pipelining. The Brocade 7800 switch must have the
Upgrade License to add FICON Management Server (CUP) or
Advanced Accelerator for FICON.

this is a Official Note from Brocade Course, I'll post here later the Course Number.

  • Advanced Extension: Enables FCIP Trunking and Adaptive Rate Limiting
  • Adaptive Networking: Activates Fibre Channel and FCIP QoS functionality
  • Brocade 7800 Upgrade License: Enables all ports, additional FCIP tunnels, and open systems tape read/write pipelining
  • FICON Management Server: Control Unit Port (CUP) enables host control of switches in mainframe environments
  • Advanced Accelerator for FICON: Accelerates IBM zGM, mainframe tapes and z/OS host connection to Teradata systems over distance
