two vdx 6740 won't join logical chassis segmented - incompatible

I have two VDX switches that I'm trying to get to join in a logical chassis.  I have set their rbidge id to different and their vcsid to the same.  I have enabled a 40G port on each and connected the ports with a 40G cable.  But still they are not talking:

One switch says:

0 Fo 11/0/49 0 Fo ?/?/? xxxxxxxx (segmented - incompatible)

the other:

0 Fo 10/0/49 0 Fo ?/?/? xxxxxxxx (segmented - incompatible)

(BTW I can't copy and paste the actual message because your page editor blocks it.)

How do I get them to join up?

Have you verified that all of the VDX switches are running identical OS versions?

Please verify that below commands are there on interfaces of the ISL link.

 show run  interface fortygigabitethernet 11/0/49

 show run  interface fortygigabitethernet 10/0/49

fabric isl enable
fabric trunk enable

Re: two vdx 6740 won't join logical chassis segmented - incompatible

I've just stumbled across this too - and when I look at the error messages on the boxes when I enable the interface:

box1(config)# interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50
box1(conf-if-fo-30/0/50)# shutdown
2016/07/08-16:08:08, [NSM-1020], 654, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is administratively down.
2016/07/08-16:08:08, [NSM-1003], 655, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is link down.
box1(conf-if-fo-30/0/50)# no shutdown
2016/07/08-16:08:12, [NSM-1019], 656, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is administratively up.
box1(conf-if-fo-30/0/50)# 2016/07/08-16:08:13, [NSM-1001], 657, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is online.
2016/07/08-16:08:15, [NSM-1002], 658, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is protocol down.
2016/07/08-16:08:15, [FABR-1001], 659, SW/0 | Active, WARNING, box1, Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50, ESC Distributed Config DB conflict.
2016/07/08-16:08:15, [NSM-1001], 660, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, box1,  Interface FortyGigabitEthernet 30/0/50 is online.

Which implies to me that I can't combine two VDX's that I've partly configured - I have to build one and then add the others as empty boxes and build up the config incrementally.  There's a certain logic there.

Yes. I believe the best remedy is on the nodes(s) you don't want to keep the config changes on (config is still kept by the other "half" of the fabric) issue the copy default-config startup-config command and the switch(s) will reboot with defaults and should join the fabric that it was severed from after that.

The node should recover back to the config state it would have had before it was severed from the fabric but minus any changes that caused the segmentation.
