Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Hello,

We are deploying three brand new pairs of VDX6730-76 (NOS v2.1.1 Out of the box).

For compatibility purposes, I was trying a 1m passive Twinax cable, supposed to be Brocade compatible, between a pair of switches.

Looks like the switchs don't like them :

VDX1 :

Even if the Vendor name appears as Foundry, Vendor OUI refers to Brocade according to this :

Also, according to the comments on this link, I should be ok too :

UCS and VCS a great combination. | UCSguru.com

Any idea what went wrong ?

Thank you.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Hi "ybzahr",

You mention "passive" twinax. I was under the impession the VDX 6730 supports only "active" twinax. Perhaps that's the issue.

Please see the comment by Juan Tarrio from Brocade in this blog post.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Hello Brook,

I read that post. I also read VDX6730 Hardware Reference Manual (May 16th 2012 issue) stating :

Chapter 1 :

"

•    Support for optical cables and active twin axial (twinax) copper cables

•    Support for direct-attach copper cables

"

And Chapter 4 :

"

The optical SFP+ transceivers support both Short Reach (SR) and Long Reach (LR) modules. Direct-attach copper cables support distances of 1 meter, 3 meters, and 5 meters. Direct-attach optical cables support distances of 10 meters and 20 meters.

Non-branded active twinax cables can be used, but Brocade does not support them.

"

So, where is the truth ? Any plans in the futur NOS releases for supporting passive ?

Still, Active is usually used for distances > 5m and is more expensive than passive.

Any help / feddback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Youssef.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Youseef,

I think it's pretty clear that only active twinax is supported today as that's stated in the documentation.  I don't have anything to share about any plans in the future to support passive twinax.

I hope that is helpful.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Brook,

I understand...

But just for clarity, aren't "10G-SFPP-TWX-0101" (actually in Brocade's catalogue) supposed to be accepted ?

Thanks.

Best.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Youssef,

Ah, yes, I see that now in your original posting the product ID.  I got distracted by your comment "passive" twin-ax.  As I said earlier, I understood that the twin-ax listed in the product specifications was active twin-ax, so that's why I kept pointing that out.

Is it possible there is a defect with this cable?

Have you contacted service/support about this?

If there is a defect I'm sure they can help you with a replacement.

Best.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Brook,

We are try and buying this generique cables that are supposed to be Brocade Compatible.

I have a half douzen of them, I will to try another one or two.

I still have to check if theese are really passive or active, I will check that with my provider.

In the mean time, we are looking for replacement solutions with our local Brocade team.

I will keep you posted.

Best regards.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Hello,

As a follow up, I have tried several other cables from the same pool and it has nothing to do with a defect.

It's just that passive Twinax are simply not supported by the VDX switches as Brooks pointed out.

We tested original Brocade active Twinax and they worked like a charm.

Thanks.

Best.

Re: Passive Twinax cables not recognized in VDX switches

Still seems to be a big disadvanage for Brocade though that the Nexus's can support passive twinax  compared to the VDX's.
