Data Center Infrastructure-Validation Test: Cisco Nexus OSPF Interoperability with Brocade VCS Fabric

Overview

Brocade’s VCS® Fabric is available with Brocade’s VDX® Switches. VDX Switches use Brocade Network Operating System (NOS. With the release of NOS 3.0, the VCS Fabric supports Layer 3 routing services including OSPF and Brocade’s innovative VRRP-E for active/active gateway services that span multiple VDX switches.

Adding a VCS Fabric to an existing datacenter network often requires integration with existing Cisco Nexus switches. These validation tests demonstrate interoperability of a VCS Fabric with OSPF at the edge and a core using Cisco Nexus 7000 switches with NX-OS 6.x. Adding a VCS Fabric to the traditional topology lets customers collapse the core/aggregation/access topology into a more efficient core/edge topology. As shown in these tests, a VCS Fabric core/edge co-exists with a traditional core/aggregation/access topology.

 

Purpose of This Document

This provides validation of OSPF interoperability for a VCS Fabric of VDX Switches with NOS 3.0 at the Edge and Cisco Nexus 7000 switches with NX-OS 6.x at the Core. The tests demonstrate that a VCS fabric can be introduced into an existing network using OSPF without problem.

 

Audience

Network design and operations staff who want to integrate Brocade VCS Fabric technology with existing Cisco Nexus core switches.

 

Objectives

Using a core/aggregation/access topology with OSPF routing, demonstrate OSPF interoperability for Cisco Nexus switches at the Core with Brocade VDX Switches configured in a VCS Fabric at the Edge.

 

Test Conclusions

The following table summarizes the test cases and results. In summary, no interoperability problems were found hindering OSPF interoperability of a Core using Cisco Nexus NX-OS and an Edge using Brocade VCS Fabric with NOS 3.0.

Test Plan

 

Scope

The test cases are designed to validate standards compliant interoperability in a core/aggregation/access topology typically used in datacenters. Tests include verification of connectivity and ability to pass traffic between Cisco Nexus switches and Brocade VDX switches. The scope did not include tress testing or measurement of maximum throughput.

 

Test Configuration

The topology used for this test is shown in the figure below.

Note: There is a connection to Juniper OSPF shown, but this was not included in this test.

A typical core/aggregation/access datacenter topology is used for the test. The core has a pair of Nexus 7010 switches configured with virtual port channels (vPC). The aggregation has a pair of Nexus 7010 switches connected. The access layer has a pair of Nexus 5500 switches and pair of VDX switches running Brocade Network Operating System (NOS) 3.0.

The pair of core switches and the pair of aggregation Nexus switches have a port channel connecting them. The core and aggregation layers connect to each other via another port channel. And, the access switches connect to the aggregation layer with a port channel.

The VDX switches connect to the aggregation layer via Brocade vLAG to a Nexus port-channel. The VDX ports are configured for Layer 3 mode, and running OSPF.

Brocade VDX 6710 Switch

The Brocade VDX 6710 Switch is a high-performance 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) fixed configuration switch that provides a reliable, scalable, and flexible foundation for supporting the most demanding business applications. It offers a cost-effective solution for connecting 1 GbE servers to an Ethernet fabric using Brocade VCS Fabric technology.

Brocade VDX 6720 Switch

The Brocade VDX 6720 Switch is a high-performance, ultra-low latency wire-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) fixed configuration switch. The Brocade VDX 6720 with Brocade VCS Fabric technology is an ideal platform for a variety of Top-of-Rack (ToR) fabric deployments.

Brocade VDX 6730 Switch

The Brocade VDX 6730 Switch is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) fixed configuration switch with LAN and native Fibre Channel ports. It supports multiple connectivity options, Ethernet storage connectivity for Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), iSCSI, NAS, and bridges to Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs).
